Shakes Wane

Shakes and wane are natural timber defects that affect the usable section, appearance, and structural performance of sawn wood. Shakes are splits or separations that follow the grain, often developing along annual rings or through the heartwood, while wane occurs when bark or the rounded outer surface remains on an edge because the log was not fully converted into square stock. In engineering, identifying these features supports timber grading, design decisions, and quality control by indicating potential reductions in strength, stiffness, or effective cross-sectional area. Their assessment is important when selecting wood for structural frames, beams, joints, and manufactured timber products.

SUMO is an essential and highly conserved, small ubiquitin-like modifier protein. In this protocol we are describing the use of a stress-tolerant recombinant SUMO-trapping protein (kmUTAG) to visualize native, untagged SUMO conjugates and their localization in a variety of cell types.

Sternberg's Triangular Theory of Love

2020

We typically love the people with whom we form relationships, but the type of love we have for our family, friends, and lovers differs. Robert Sternberg (1986) proposed that there are three components of love: intimacy, passion, and commitment. These three components form a triangle that defines multiple types of love: this is known as Sternberg’s triangular theory of love. Intimacy is the sharing of details and intimate thoughts and emotions. Passion is the physical attraction—the flame in the...

Retrograde Labeling of Retinal Ganglion Cells by Application of Fluoro-Gold on the Surface of Superior Colliculus

Here we present a protocol that generates large amounts of murine monocytes from heterogeneous bone marrow for translational applications. In comparison to others, this new method helps reduce the number of sacrificed animals and lowers costs by avoiding expensive methods such as high gradient magnetic cell separation (MACS).
