Shape Memory Polymer

Shape memory polymers are smart, stimuli-responsive materials that can be deformed into a temporary shape and later recover a programmed permanent shape, making them valuable in engineering designs that require controlled motion or deployment. Their behavior relies on a polymer network with stable structural segments and switchable segments that soften or reorganize when exposed to a stimulus, commonly heat, allowing stored elastic energy to drive shape recovery. Engineers use these materials in deployable structures, actuators, biomedical devices, and minimally invasive systems, where low density, flexibility, and tunable transition temperatures can support compact fabrication and remote or self-actuated operation.

The goal of this experiment is to determine and control the size, shape and stability of self-assembled discotic amphiphiles in water. For aqueous based supramolecular polymers such level of control is very difficult. We apply a strategy using both repulsive and attractive interactions. The experimental techniques applied to characterize this system are broadly applicable.

The word polymer is derived from the Greek words “poly” which means “many” and “mer” which means “parts”. Polymers are long chains of molecules composed of repeating units of smaller molecules, known as monomers. They either occur naturally, such as DNA and proteins, or can be constructed synthetically, like plastics. They have varied structural characteristics, such as linear chains, branched chains, or complex networks, that contribute to the properties that they exhibit. Additionally,...
