Ultrasound Transducer

An ultrasound transducer is a device that converts electrical energy into high-frequency sound waves and returning echoes into electrical signals, enabling noninvasive measurement and imaging. In the common piezoelectric design, an alternating voltage deforms a ceramic or crystal element, producing acoustic pulses; reflected waves then induce corresponding electrical charges, with frequency, beam shape, and timing governed by the element and surrounding materials. Engineers use ultrasound transducers in medical imaging, nondestructive testing, flow measurement, distance sensing, and industrial process monitoring. Their ability to focus energy and detect interfaces supports structural inspection, real-time visualization, and increasingly compact sensor systems.

Fixation of Ultrasound Transducers for Spinal Cord Neuromodulation in Mice

2025

This protocol describes an ultrasound transducer fixation system specifically designed for ultrasound stimulation of the spinal cord in awake mice. The method employs a fixation system to ensure accurate positioning of the ultrasound transducer while simultaneously allowing the experimental subjects to move freely without compromising the precision of stimulation.

We describe a new ultrasound-based vector tissue Doppler imaging technique to measure muscle contraction velocity, strain and strain rate with sub-millisecond temporal resolution during dynamic activities. This approach provides complementary measurements of dynamic muscle function and could lead to a better understanding of mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal disorders.

Source: Amelia R. Adelsperger, Evan H. Phillips, and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana High-frequency ultrasound systems are used to acquire high resolution images. Here, the use of a state-of-the-art system will be demonstrated to image the morphology and hemodynamics of small pulsatile arteries and veins found in mice and rats. Ultrasound is a relatively inexpensive, portable, and versatile method for the noninvasive...

This video demonstrates use of a rail-mounted high-frequency ultrasound probe to perform echocardiography on an anesthetized mouse. The methods describe both conventional two-dimensional and M-mode measurements of cardiac function in addition to newer, more powerful tools such as color Doppler, strain analysis, as well as general and targeted contrast imaging.

Ultrasound velocimetry is used to study mixing by fluid flow in liquid metal electrodes. The focus of this manuscript is to illustrate the methods used for making precise, spatially-resolved ultrasound measurements while limiting oxidation and controlling and monitoring temperature, applied current, and the heater power being supplied.
