Vebe Seconds

Vebe seconds are a measure of the consistency and workability of stiff, low-slump concrete, expressed as the time required to remold a compacted concrete sample into a cylindrical shape under controlled vibration. In the Vebe consistometer test, a fresh concrete specimen is placed in a cylindrical mold, subjected to vibration, and observed through a transparent disk; the elapsed time until the concrete completely reshapes and contacts the disk is recorded in seconds. Shorter times indicate more workable mixtures, while longer times indicate stiffer concrete. The test is particularly useful for evaluating roller-compacted and other low-workability concretes, supporting mix design, quality control, and comparisons of water, aggregate, and admixture effects.
