Voltage Gradient Control

Voltage gradient control is the engineering practice of managing how electric potential changes across a distance, helping prevent electrical overstress and maintain predictable device performance. Engineers shape the field by adjusting electrode geometry, insulation, spacing, and resistive or capacitive grading so that potential differences distribute rather than concentrate at sharp edges or material interfaces. In high-voltage equipment, this control limits partial discharge, corona, and dielectric breakdown, improving reliability and service life. It also supports consistent operation in cables, transformers, sensors, electrochemical systems, and other devices where electric-field uniformity influences safety, efficiency, and measurement accuracy.

Generator Voltage Control

Generator voltage control is crucial for maintaining the stable operation of synchronous generators and wind turbines. In older models, a DC generator driven by the rotor delivers DC power to the rotor's field winding, and the power is transferred through slip rings and brushes. In the latest models, static or brushless exciters are used. Static exciters rectify AC power from the generator terminals and then transfer the DC power directly to the rotor. Brushless exciters, on the other hand, use...

Source: Stauffer, S. et al. In Vitro Disassembly of Influenza A Virus Capsids by Gradient Centrifugation. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates the pH-dependent disassembly of influenza A virus (IAV) cores using gradient ultracentrifugation. It outlines glycerol gradient preparation, ultracentrifugation, and how different pH conditions affect IAV core disassembly.

Density Gradient Ultracentrifugation

Density gradient ultracentrifugation is a common technique used to isolate and purify biomolecules and cell structures. This technique exploits the fact that, in suspension, particles that are more dense than the solvent will sediment, while those that are less dense will float. A high-speed ultracentrifuge is used to accelerate this process in order to separate biomolecules within a density gradient, which can be established by layering liquids of decreasing density in a centrifuge tube. The...

Here, we present oxygen gradient ektacytometry, a rapid and reproducible method to measure red blood cell deformability in samples from patients with sickle cell disease under controlled deoxygenation and reoxygenation. This technique provides a way to study red blood cell sickling and to monitor sickle cell disease treatment efficacy.

The movement of electrons in a conductor requires some form of energy or work, usually provided by an external force, like a battery. This force is called the electromotive force or voltage. The voltage between two points, referred to as points "a" and "b," in an electric circuit is the energy (or work) needed to move a unit charge from point "a" to point "b," and this relationship is expressed mathematically as In this equation, "w" represents the energy measured in joules (J), and "q"...
