Welding Simulation

Welding simulation is the computer-based modeling of welding processes to predict how heat, material flow, and mechanical forces affect a joint, helping engineers assess performance before fabrication. It uses numerical methods, commonly finite element analysis, to represent heat input, temperature-dependent material properties, melting and solidification, residual stress, and distortion under defined welding conditions. In engineering, these models support process planning, parameter optimization, weld sequence selection, and control of dimensional accuracy while reducing costly trial-and-error experiments. Simulation also helps evaluate fatigue risk and joint integrity, contributing to safer designs, improved manufacturing efficiency, and more reliable welded structures.

This protocol outlines a general workflow for constructing an artificial neural network for welding simulation using datasets generated automatically through Python scripts with macro functions. The workflow is validated against a benchmark case involving single-pass, straight-line welding. The surrogate model's predictive accuracy shows a strong agreement with finite element simulations.

The siphon breaking phenomenon was investigated experimentally and a theoretical model was proposed. A simulation program based on the theoretical model was developed and the results of the simulation program were compared with experimental results. It was concluded that the results of the simulation program matched the experimental results well.
