F0 Male Carriers

F0 male carriers are founder-generation males that harbor a newly introduced or edited genetic allele and can pass it to their offspring, making them important for establishing inherited genetic lines. The allele is typically created through embryo manipulation or germline genome editing, and because editing may occur after the first cell divisions, an F0 male can be genetically mosaic; breeding tests determine whether the change is present in sperm and transmitted to F1 progeny. Researchers use F0 male carriers to establish transgenic, knockout, or knock-in models, evaluate germline transmission, and study how specific variants influence inheritance, development, disease, or other biological traits.

Electron Carriers

Electron carriers can be thought of as electron shuttles. These compounds can easily accept electrons (i.e., be reduced) or lose them (i.e., be oxidized). They play an essential role in energy production because cellular respiration is contingent on the flow of electrons. Over the many stages of cellular respiration, glucose breaks down into carbon dioxide and water. Electron carriers pick up electrons lost by glucose in these reactions, temporarily storing and releasing them into the electron...

Enriching for Males: Maintaining a Stock of Male C. elegans

Nematodes can be propagated easily in the lab--in part because hermaphrodites can reproduce by self-fertilization. However, genetic crosses and other experiments may require a large number of males. This video describes a method to enrich for male C. elegans.

Male Rectal Exam

Source: Joseph Donroe, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT While its usefulness in cancer screening is debated, the male rectal examination remains an important part of the physical exam. The exam is indicated in selected patients with lower urinary tract symptoms, urinary and/or fecal incontinence or retention, back pain, anorectal symptoms, abdominal complaints, trauma patients, unexplained anemia, weight loss, or bone pain. There are no absolute...

Infertility in Males

Male infertility affects millions of couples worldwide, arising from various factors that impact different stages of the reproductive process. An endocrine imbalance resulting from conditions like hypogonadism, Klinefelter syndrome, or pituitary disorders can disrupt hormone levels and reduce sperm production. Testicular defects, such as tumors, cryptorchidism, atrophic testes, abnormal sperm morphology, and low sperm count or motility, may arise due to genetic factors, structural...

Carrier Transport

The generation of electrical current in semiconductors is fundamentally driven by two mechanisms: drift and diffusion. These processes are essential for the functionality and performance of semiconductor-based devices. Drift Current: The drift of charge carriers is started by an external electric field (E). Charged particles, such as electrons and holes, experience an acceleration between collisions with lattice atoms. For electrons, this results in a drift velocity (vd) given by: Where μe is...
