Sliding Window Analysis

Sliding window analysis is a computational method that examines patterns within a sequence by evaluating successive, overlapping segments of fixed length. In genetics, a window moves along DNA, RNA, or genomic coordinates one position or interval at a time, while a chosen measure, such as GC content, nucleotide diversity, mutation density, or sequence conservation, is calculated for each segment. Plotting these measurements reveals local changes that may be obscured in whole-sequence averages. Researchers use sliding window analysis to identify candidate regulatory regions, detect genomic variation, compare evolutionary conservation, characterize recombination or mutation hotspots, and guide further experimental or statistical analysis.

Design Example: Designing Water Slide

2025

When designing a water slide, controlling the speed of water flow is crucial for rider safety while maintaining an exciting experience. As water flows down the slide, gravity causes it to accelerate, with its speed at the bottom depending on the height from which it starts. The higher the slide, the more potential energy the water has at the top, which is converted into kinetic energy as it descends, increasing its speed. Bernoulli's principle determines the water's velocity along the slide.
