Burr Hole Creation

Burr hole creation is a neurosurgical procedure that makes a small opening through the skull, providing access to the intracranial space for diagnosis or treatment. Using a specialized drill, the surgeon penetrates the skull, opens the underlying dura when necessary, and may drain accumulated blood, cerebrospinal fluid, or infected material through the opening, often with catheter placement. The technique is commonly used to treat chronic subdural hematomas, relieve selected forms of intracranial pressure, and obtain access for monitoring or drainage. In immunology and infection research, it also highlights how sterile technique, tissue barriers, and host defense influence the risk and management of postoperative intracranial infection.

Detection of Black Holes

2023

Although black holes were theoretically postulated in the 1920s, they remained outside the domain of observational astronomy until the 1970s. Their closest cousins are neutron stars, which are composed almost entirely of neutrons packed against each other, making them extremely dense. A neutron star has the same mass as the Sun but its diameter is only a few kilometers. Therefore, the escape velocity from their surface is close to the speed of light. Not until the 1960s, when the first neutron...
