Magnetic Glass Particles

Magnetic glass particles are microscale materials that combine a glass or silica-based surface with magnetically responsive components, enabling controlled movement and collection in an applied magnetic field. Their magnetic core or embedded material responds to the field, while the glass surface can interact with biomolecules, allowing particles to capture, retain, and separate target material during laboratory processing. In immunology and infection research, this behavior supports the purification of nucleic acids, proteins, or other analytes from complex biological samples. Magnetic handling can reduce centrifugation steps, improve workflow consistency, and facilitate sensitive downstream assays for pathogen detection and immune-response analysis.

A Technique for Magnetic Glass Particle-Mediated Nucleic Acid Extraction from Blood

2025

This video demonstrates a technique for nucleic acid extraction from whole human blood using magnetic glass particles (MGPs) — small magnetic beads coated with silica. Upon lysing the blood cells using a lysis buffer, the released nucleic acids bind to the surface of silica-coated MGPs, extracting the molecules from the sample.

A scanner for imaging magnetic particles in planar samples was developed using the planar frequency mixing magnetic detection technique. The magnetic intermodulation product response from the nonlinear nonhysteretic magnetization of the particles is recorded upon a two-frequency excitation. It can be used to take 2D images of thin biological samples.

Growth and Differentiation of Magnetic Nano Particle-Loaded Neurons on Magnetic Platforms

This video demonstrates the uptake of fluorescent magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) by the neuronal cells via endocytosis. Growing these MNP-loaded neurons on the magnetically patterned substrate enables the attachment of the cells. The addition of a growth factor containing medium aids in the growth of neuron extensions, while the magnetic field of the substrate directs the orientation of the extension.

Motion Of A Charged Particle In A Magnetic Field

2023

A charged particle experiences a force when moving through a magnetic field. Consider the field to be uniform and the charged particle to move perpendicular to it. If the field is in a vacuum, the magnetic field is the dominant factor determining the motion. Since the magnetic force is perpendicular to the direction of motion, a charged particle follows a curved path. The particle continues to follow this curved path until it forms a complete circle. Another way to look at this is that the...

The Looking Glass Self

2025

The concept of the looking-glass self describes how an individual's self-concept is shaped by their perception of how others see them. This psychological theory, first introduced by sociologist Charles Horton Cooley in 1902, posits that self-identity emerges in a social context and is influenced by the judgments—real or imagined—of others.Research suggests that individuals frequently overestimate how positively others perceive them. This is particularly evident in physical self-perception,...
