Plate Reader Absorbance

Plate reader absorbance is a microplate-based method that measures how much light a liquid sample absorbs at a selected wavelength, providing a rapid, quantitative readout for biochemical and cellular assays. A plate reader directs light through each well, and the instrument converts the decrease in transmitted light into absorbance, which can reflect the concentration of a colored product according to the Beer–Lambert law. In immunology and infection research, absorbance measurements support enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, colorimetric immunoassays, protein quantification, and microbial growth analysis. Standard curves, blanks, and replicate wells help convert optical signals into reliable measurements of antibodies, antigens, enzymatic activity, or pathogen proliferation.

Introduction to the Microplate Reader

2023

The microplate reader is a multimodal instrument that allows for a variety of experiments to be performed and measured simultaneously. Microplate readers can make absorbance, fluorescence and luminescence measurements. Multiwell plates are integral to the microplate reader and allow for many experiments to be performed at once. Regardless of the assay type, experiments on the plate reader utilize a standard curve to determine the experimental values. This curve uses samples of known...

Source: Michael G. Benton and Kerry M. Dooley, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Gas absorbers are used to remove contaminants from gas streams. Multiple designs are used to accomplish this objective1. A packed bed column uses gas and liquid streams running counter to each other in a column packed with loose packing materials, such as ceramics, metals, and plastics, or structured packing1. The packed bed uses surface area created by the packing to...
