Small Intestine Immunology

Small intestine immunology is the study of how immune defenses in the small-intestinal mucosa protect the body while tolerating food and beneficial microbiota. Its mechanisms combine the epithelial barrier, antimicrobial factors, mucus, secretory IgA, and organized lymphoid tissues that sample luminal antigens and coordinate innate and adaptive responses; regulatory pathways help limit unnecessary inflammation. In immunology and infection research, this system provides a framework for understanding pathogen entry, intestinal inflammation, malabsorption, and immune-mediated disease, while informing vaccine design, microbiome studies, and strategies to strengthen mucosal protection without disrupting tolerance.

We describe a novel surgical method for catheterizing 'intestinal loops' within the ileum of sheep. Once animals have recovered from surgery and have cleared antibiotics and analgesics, multiple treatments can be deposited directly in loops via the catheters.

2024

Immunological memory, a pivotal pillar of the adaptive immune system, is responsible for the body's ability to remember and respond more swiftly and effectively to previously encountered pathogens. This remarkable feature is what makes vaccines so effective in preventing diseases. What is Immunological Memory? Immunological memory is an integral function of the immune system that allows it to recognize and react more rapidly and effectively to pathogens previously encountered. This feature is...

Bacterial Cell Staining and Preparation for Immunological Studies

This video demonstrates the staining and preparation of bacterial cells for immunological studies using red fluorescent dye. The stained bacteria are diluted and resuspended in a growth medium to achieve the desired bacterial concentration for host cell infection, representing the multiplicity of infection.
