Surgical Intervention

Surgical intervention is the deliberate use of operative procedures to diagnose, treat, or prevent disease by altering damaged, infected, or abnormal tissue. In immunology and infection, it can provide source control through incision, drainage, debridement, removal of infected material, or repair of tissue barriers, thereby reducing microbial burden and helping immune defenses reach the affected site. Surgical decisions depend on the infection’s location, extent, tissue viability, and response to antimicrobial therapy. Understanding these principles supports management of abscesses, wound infections, and device-associated infections while highlighting how tissue injury, inflammation, healing, and host defense interact during treatment.
