Mathematical Concept

A mathematical concept is an abstract idea used to describe quantities, structures, relationships, patterns, or change, providing a foundation for reasoning across mathematics and science. It works by defining objects and their properties, then connecting them through notation, axioms, logical rules, and mathematical models that support deduction and problem solving. Mathematical concepts include numbers, functions, sets, symmetry, probability, and geometric forms, each offering a framework for representing or analyzing complex situations. Their applications range from measuring physical systems and predicting uncertainty to designing algorithms, interpreting data, and developing theories in fields such as engineering, economics, computing, and the natural sciences.

2007

Charles Taylor and John Marshall explain the utility of mathematical modeling for evaluating the effectiveness of population replacement strategy. Insight is given into how computational models can provide information on the population dynamics of mosquitoes and the spread of transposable elements through A. gambiae subspecies. The ethical considerations of releasing genetically modified mosquitoes into the wild are discussed.

The Mathematics of Equilibrium

Consider the market for compact cars as an example, where 'P' stands for the price of a compact car in thousands of dollars. We can model the quantity demanded (Qd) and quantity supplied (Qs) with the following linear equations: Quantity Demanded for Compact Cars: Qd = 60−3P Quantity Supplied for Compact Cars: Qs = 20+2P At market equilibrium, Qd = Qs. By setting these two equations equal to each other, we can solve for 'P', the equilibrium price: 60−3P = 20+2P Solving this equation gives us...

Mathematical Induction

Mathematical induction is a structured method of proof used to confirm the truth of statements involving natural numbers. Consider the sum of the first n natural numbers:This formula describes a pattern that appears to hold true as more terms are added. To verify that it is valid for all natural numbers, mathematical induction proceeds in two essential steps. The first is the base case, where the formula is tested for the initial value, typically n = 1. Substituting into both sides confirms the...

Fundamental Mathematical Principles in Pharmacokinetics: Mathematical Expressions and Units

2024

Mathematical principles play a crucial role in pharmacokinetics, providing a framework for understanding and quantifying drug distribution and elimination dynamics in the body. By utilizing mathematical expressions and units, pharmacologists can accurately characterize the behavior of drugs, optimize dosing regimens, and predict therapeutic outcomes. One significant application of mathematics in pharmacokinetics is the characterization of drug distribution through the volume of distribution...

Self-Concept

Self-concept is the cognitive and emotional understanding individuals hold about their identity. It evolves through various developmental stages, beginning in infancy and maturing as children grow. This concept influences how individuals perceive their abilities, interact with others, and manage challenges throughout life. Infancy and Emerging Recognition During infancy, self-concept is virtually nonexistent. Babies do not distinguish themselves as separate entities and often mistake their...
