Monthly Payments

Monthly payments are fixed or variable amounts paid at regular monthly intervals to repay a loan, finance a purchase, or fund an installment agreement. In financial mathematics, each payment is calculated from the principal, interest rate, loan term, and payment frequency, with interest typically accruing on the unpaid balance while the remaining amount reduces the principal. Amortization schedules show how the balance changes over time and how the proportions of interest and principal shift with each payment. Understanding monthly payments helps borrowers compare financing options, estimate total repayment costs, and evaluate the effects of changing rates, terms, down payments, or extra payments.
