Anterior Capsular Tear

An anterior capsular tear is a break in the front portion of the eye’s lens capsule, most often recognized as a complication during cataract surgery. It can occur when a continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis extends toward the capsule’s edge or when instruments and lens fragments place stress on the capsule and supporting zonules. The tear’s size, location, and direction determine whether it remains stable or progresses posteriorly, potentially affecting intraocular lens placement and surgical planning. Understanding this complication helps clinicians identify risk factors, monitor tear extension, and select appropriate techniques for lens removal, capsule support, and postoperative care.
