Blood Cancer Screening

Blood cancer screening comprises tests that look for abnormal blood cells or molecular changes associated with leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma, helping identify disease that may require further evaluation. Initial assessment often includes a complete blood count and peripheral blood smear, while flow cytometry, cytogenetic analysis, molecular testing, or bone marrow examination can characterize abnormal cells and genetic alterations when results or symptoms raise concern. Because routine population screening is not widely established for most blood cancers, testing is typically guided by clinical findings, family history, or treatment monitoring. These methods support earlier recognition, accurate classification, risk assessment, and selection of appropriate therapy.

This video demonstrates the methodology to screen for major cell death profiles in ionizing radiation (IR) induced cancer cell lines using DAPI staining assay. The DAPI-stained nuclei of target cells undergoing cell death exhibit distinct morphologies and can be easily identified by fluorescence microscopy.

Genetic Screens

2023

Genetic screens are critical tools for defining gene function and understanding gene interactions. Screens typically involve mutating genes and then assessing the affected organisms for phenotypes of interest. The process can be “forward”, where mutations are generated randomly to identify unknown genes responsible for the phenotypes, or it can be “reverse”, where specific genes are targeted for mutation to observe what phenotypes are produced. Here, JoVE reviews various types of genetic...
