Bronchial Blockers

Bronchial blockers are specialized airway devices used to isolate one lung while ventilating the other through a single-lumen endotracheal tube, an important technique in thoracic and critical care medicine. Positioned under bronchoscopic guidance, the blocker’s inflatable cuff occludes a targeted mainstem or lobar bronchus, allowing controlled deflation of that lung while ventilation continues in the opposite lung; suction through the blocker can also help remove secretions or blood. Lung separation improves surgical exposure during thoracic procedures and can limit cross-contamination in unilateral pulmonary disease, while careful placement and monitoring help prevent malposition, inadequate oxygenation, and airway injury.

Bronchial Thermoplasty: A Novel Therapeutic Approach to Severe Asthma

Cited by 4 •

2010

Bronchial thermoplasty is a non-drug procedure for severe persistent asthma that delivers thermal energy to the airway wall in a precisely controlled manner to reduce excessive airway smooth muscle. Reducing airway smooth muscle decreases the ability of the airways to constrict, thereby reducing the frequency of asthma attacks.

Here we describe a detailed method for growing primary human bronchial epithelial cells from explants of human bronchial airway tissue including differentiated growth on an air-liquid interface. This method provides an abundant source of primary cells for investigating the role of the airway epithelium in human lung health and disease.

The Bronchial Tree

2025

The human bronchi and bronchial tree play a crucial role in the respiratory system, facilitating the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Let's delve into the intricate structure and functions of these respiratory components. The trachea, commonly known as the windpipe, is a tube that connects the larynx (voice box) to the bronchi. At a point called the carina, it bifurcates into two primary bronchi. The right primary bronchus is wider, shorter, and more vertical than the left primary...

Optimal Lentivirus Production and Cell Culture Conditions Necessary to Successfully Transduce Primary Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells

Primary human bronchial epithelial cells are difficult to transduce. This protocol describes the production of lentiviruses and their concentration as well as the optimal culture conditions necessary to achieve highly efficient transductions in these cells throughout differentiation to a pseudostratified epithelium.

Assessing Muscle Contraction with Neuromuscular Blocker Treatment

This video demonstrates assessing the muscle using cultured motor neurons, Schwann cells, and myotubes, followed by treatment with a neuromuscular blocker to inhibit contraction. Color-coded time-motion graphics show a color-coded time-motion graphic. Red indicates the fastest movement, and blue indicates the slowest.
