Closed Femoral Fracture

A closed femoral fracture is a break in the thighbone in which the overlying skin remains intact, making it a serious orthopedic injury despite the absence of an open wound. It commonly results from high-energy trauma, and the force can disrupt bone continuity, cause substantial internal bleeding, deformity, and damage to nearby nerves or blood vessels; clinicians assess these risks with physical examination and imaging. Management typically focuses on pain control, stabilization, and timely reduction and fixation when indicated, followed by rehabilitation to restore mobility. Understanding this injury supports emergency triage, surgical planning, complication prevention, and functional recovery.

This protocol describes a procedure for serial sampling of femoral bone marrow (BM) without requiring the sacrifice of mice. This procedure facilitates longitudinal studies of the BM composition of mice over time and provides serial access to cells within the BM for ex vivo and transplantation studies.

2023

Source: James W Bonz, MD, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA Central venous access is necessary in a multitude of clinical situations, including vascular access, vasopressor and caustic medication delivery, central venous pressure monitoring, volume resuscitation, total parental nutrition, hemodialysis, and frequent phlebotomy. There are three veins in the body that are accessed for central venous cannulation: the internal jugular, the subclavian, and the...
