Compression Ultrasound

Compression ultrasound is a focused medical imaging technique that assesses whether a vein collapses under gentle pressure, providing a rapid, noninvasive method for detecting abnormalities such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). During the examination, an ultrasound transducer emits high-frequency sound waves and is pressed against selected venous segments; a normal vein compresses fully, whereas an incompressible segment may contain a clot. Clinicians commonly use this bedside method to evaluate suspected lower-extremity DVT, guide urgent treatment decisions, and reduce reliance on more invasive or resource-intensive testing. Its portability also supports point-of-care assessment in emergency, inpatient, and outpatient settings.

Compression Tests on Hardened Concrete

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA There are two distinct stages in a construction project involving concrete. The first stage involves batching, transporting, and casting fresh concrete. At this stage, the material is viscous, and the workability and finishability are the key performance criteria. The second stage occurs when the hydration process begins shortly after the concrete is placed in the form, and the concrete will...

2025

This protocol presents the configuration of a compression test device capable of precisely measuring the mechanical properties of microstructures in the small-strain region, along with a systematic method for compression testing using this device. The proposed device can be used to analyze various microstructures and the mechanical behavior of polymer-based materials.

Assessing Spinal Cord Compression Using Diffusion Tensor Imaging

Source: Zheng, W. et. al., Diffusion Tensor Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Chronic Spinal Cord Compression. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates diffusion tensor imaging in assessing chronic spinal cord compression. By analyzing water diffusion patterns, fractional anisotropy, and apparent diffusion coefficient values, the findings reveal axonal damage in compressed regions. The findings provide critical insights into spinal cord pathology and structural integrity.
