Copper Metabolism

Copper metabolism is the coordinated process by which the body absorbs, transports, uses, stores, and eliminates copper, an essential trace element required for cellular energy production, connective tissue formation, and antioxidant defense. After intestinal absorption, copper binds to transport proteins, is delivered to tissues for incorporation into copper-dependent enzymes, and is primarily excreted through bile; the liver regulates this balance through specialized transport pathways. In medicine, understanding copper metabolism supports the diagnosis and management of disorders such as Wilson disease and Menkes disease, guides interpretation of copper and ceruloplasmin measurements, and informs research into neurological, hepatic, and systemic effects of copper imbalance.

Zebrafish represent a powerful vertebrate model that has been under-utilised for metabolic studies. Here we describe a rapid way to measure the in vivo metabolic profile of developing zebrafish that allows the comparison of different mitochondrial function parameters between genetically or pharmacologically manipulated embryos, thereby increasing the applicability of this organism.

An Introduction to Cell Metabolism

2023

In cells, critical molecules are either built by joining together individual units like amino acids or nucleotides, or broken down into smaller components. Respectively, the reactions responsible for this are referred to as anabolic and catabolic. These reactions require or produce energy typically in the form of a “high-energy” molecule called ATP. Together, these processes make up “Cell Metabolism,” and are hallmarks of healthy, living cells.JoVE’s introduction to cell metabolism briefly...

Exfoliation of Egyptian Blue and Han Blue, Two Alkali Earth Copper Silicate-based Pigments

The preparation and exfoliation of CaCuSi4O10 and BaCuSi4O10 are described. Upon stirring in hot water, CaCuSi4O10 spontaneously exfoliates into monolayers, whereas BaCuSi4O10 requires ultrasonication in organic solvents. Near infrared (NIR) imaging illustrates the NIR emission properties of these materials, and aqueous dispersions of these nanomaterials are useful for solution processing.
