Elbow Function

Elbow function describes how the elbow complex connects the upper arm and forearm to position the hand, generate movement, and provide stability during daily and athletic activities. Its ulnohumeral and radiocapitellar joints primarily permit flexion and extension, while the proximal radioulnar joint enables forearm pronation and supination; muscles produce torque, and ligaments and joint surfaces guide and limit motion. In medicine, understanding elbow function supports physical examination, interpretation of movement limitations, and evaluation of conditions such as fractures, dislocations, tendinopathies, and nerve-related impairment. Functional analysis also informs rehabilitation and surgical planning aimed at restoring strength, mobility, and coordinated upper-limb use.

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The elbow is a hinged joint that involves the articulation of 3 bones: the humerus, radius, and ulna. It is a much more stable joint than the shoulder, and because of that, the elbow has less range of motion. The elbow and its structures are prone to significant injuries, particularly with repetitive motion. Lateral and medial epicondylitis (also called tennis elbow and golfer's elbow) are two common diagnoses and often...

We developed a real-time mirror robot system for functional recovery of hemiplegic arms using automatic control technology, conducted a clinical study on healthy subjects, and determined tasks through feedback from rehabilitation doctors. This simple mirror robot can be applied effectively to occupational therapy in stroke patients with a hemiplegic arm.

Monitoring brain activity during upright motor tasks is of great value when investigating the neural source of movement disorders. Here, we demonstrate a protocol that combines functional near infrared spectroscopy with continuous monitoring of muscle and kinematic activity during 4 types of motor tasks.
