Fitc-labeled Erythrocytes

FITC-labeled erythrocytes are red blood cells tagged with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), a fluorescent marker used to visualize or quantify cell behavior in medical research. FITC reacts with amino groups on erythrocyte surface proteins, forming stable thiourea bonds that allow the cells to emit green fluorescence when excited by appropriate light. Researchers can then detect the labeled cells by fluorescence microscopy or flow cytometry to assess erythrocyte distribution, survival, adhesion, aggregation, and interactions with other blood components. This approach supports studies of red blood cell physiology, vascular function, transfusion biology, and diagnostic assay development.

Studying the Permeation of FITC and FITC-Ferritin through an In Vitro Blood-Brain Barrier Model

2025

This video demonstrates a method to study permeation through an in vitro blood-brain barrier (BBB) model using astrocytes and endothelial cells on a membrane insert, with free FITC and FITC-loaded ferritin. FITC-ferritin bound to receptors on endothelial cells and crossed the membrane barrier to the lower chamber while free FITC showed restricted permeation and remained in the upper chamber.

Annexin V Binding Assay: A Fluorescence-Based Technique to Identify Apoptotic Erythrocytes via Phosphatidylserine Labeling

In this video, we demonstrate the Annexin V binding assay to measure the degree of eryptosis, erythrocyte programmed cell death, using fluorescent Annexin V staining. Apoptotic erythrocytes demonstrate phosphatidylserine translocation from the inner to the outer leaflet of the cell membrane, causing the fluorophore-tagged Annexin V to bind to the translocated phosphatidylserine, thereby emitting a fluorescent signal.
