Food Intake Reduction

Food intake reduction is a decrease in the amount of food consumed over a defined period, a clinically relevant change because it can alter energy balance, nutritional status, and body weight. It may occur through reduced appetite, earlier satiety, smaller portions, or physiological and behavioral changes that limit meal size and frequency; these effects involve interactions among gastrointestinal signals, brain appetite circuits, and environmental cues. In medicine, measuring food intake reduction helps assess interventions for obesity and metabolic disease, evaluate treatment responses, and identify unintended inadequate nutrition. Careful monitoring is essential because beneficial calorie reduction must be distinguished from malnutrition, medication-related appetite loss, or disease-associated wasting.

Regulation of Food Intake

2024

Short-term regulation of food intake primarily involves neural signals from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, blood nutrient levels, and GI tract hormones. Communication between the gut and brain via vagal nerve fibers plays a significant role in evaluating the contents of the gut. Clinical studies have shown that protein ingestion produces a more prolonged response in these nerve fibers compared to an equivalent amount of glucose. Additionally, the activation of stretch receptors caused by GI...
