Functional Connectivity

Functional connectivity is a measure of the statistical dependence between activity patterns in separate brain regions, indicating how they interact as a network rather than whether they are anatomically connected. In medicine, researchers commonly estimate it from synchronized fluctuations in resting-state fMRI BOLD signals or electrophysiological recordings, using correlation or related connectivity analyses to identify coordinated and disrupted communication. These network profiles help characterize conditions such as stroke, epilepsy, dementia, and psychiatric disorders and can support biomarker development, treatment planning, and monitoring of recovery. Changes in network organization may reveal functional effects that structural imaging alone can miss, although interpretation depends on acquisition methods, brain state, and clinical context.

Functions of Connective Tissues

2025

Connective tissues perform a broad range of functions in the body. Their primary function is to connect and link different tissues in the body and act as packaging material between tissues. The areolar tissue, a connective tissue prototype, commonly cements various tissue types in diverse body organs. In contrast, adipose tissue cushions internal organs while insulating the body from heat loss. Hard connective tissues, such as bones and cartilage, provide structure and support to the body.

Studying the Regeneration of Functional Connections between Spinal Cord Slices Using a Multi-Electrode Array

2025

The video demonstrates the functional regeneration of propriospinal connections using a multi-electrode array (MEA)-based assay. The spinal cord slices are placed on the MEA and are allowed to fuse. The fused slices are mechanically separated by creating a lesion, inducing propriospinal neurons to grow over the lesion and connect the slices. The electrical activity of the slices is assessed to identify the regeneration of functional connections.
