Gradient Direction Quality Control

Gradient Direction Quality Control is a validation process in medical imaging that checks whether directional encoding gradients, especially in diffusion MRI, are accurately represented and applied during acquisition. It compares intended gradient vectors with scanner coordinates and image metadata to identify errors such as axis swaps, sign reversals, or inconsistent orientation, which can distort diffusion measurements and derived tissue maps. This quality control supports reliable diffusion tensor and tractography analyses, improves comparability across scans and sites, and helps researchers and clinicians judge whether observed abnormalities reflect biology rather than acquisition artifacts.
