Handheld Dynamometer

A handheld dynamometer is a portable device that objectively measures the force produced by a muscle or muscle group, supporting clinical assessment of strength and physical function. During testing, a clinician positions and stabilizes the patient’s limb while the patient performs a maximal isometric contraction against the dynamometer; an embedded force sensor records the applied force, typically in newtons or kilograms of force. These measurements provide more precise and reproducible data than manual muscle testing alone, helping assess weakness, monitor rehabilitation, evaluate neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders, and track recovery after injury or surgery. Standardized positioning and repeated trials improve measurement consistency.

Simple and accessible methods were developed to measure the motor aspect of cancer-related fatigue objectively and quantitatively. We describe, in detail, ways to administer the physical fatigue test using a simple handgrip device as well as methods to calculate fatigue indices.

Handheld Device for Saliva Pretreatment to Improve Cortisol Detection

2026

This protocol describes a rapid saliva pretreatment method for improving cortisol detection. A handheld filtration device is used to remove mucins and other interfering substances while preserving the target analyte. The pretreated saliva exhibits improved capillary flow, thereby enabling more consistent and reproducible assay performance.

The goal of the methods presented here is to measure aerosol optical thickness of the atmosphere. The sun photometer is pointed at the sun and the largest voltage reading obtained on an in-built digital voltmeter is recorded. Atmospheric measurements such as barometric pressure and relative humidity are also performed.
