Minimally Invasive Liver Resection

Minimally invasive liver resection is a surgical approach that removes part of the liver through small incisions rather than a large open abdominal incision, aiming to reduce tissue trauma while treating selected hepatic disease. Using laparoscopic or robotic instruments, surgeons visualize the liver with a camera, identify and divide blood vessels and bile ducts, transect the planned liver segment, and remove it through a protected incision. In medicine, this technique can address certain primary or metastatic liver tumors and other localized lesions, with potential benefits including less postoperative pain, shorter hospitalization, and faster recovery. Careful patient selection and advanced imaging remain essential for safety and complete resection.

Source: Alomari, S., et al. Implementation of Minimally Invasive Brain Tumor Resection in Rodents for High Viability Tissue Collection. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)This video demonstrates the use of a minimally invasive resection system (MIRS) to excise tumor tissue from an anesthetized mouse implanted with a tumor. The procedure involves securing the mouse onto a stereotactic frame, reopening the previous surgical site to access the brain, and inserting a specialized cannula that utilizes suction and a...

A high incidence of tumor recurrence after resection of liver metastases remains an unsolved problem. The illustrated mouse model may be useful to investigate the reasons for such recurrences. It combines a liver resection model with intrahepatic tumor cell injection for the first time.

Endoscopic septoplasty is a time-honored surgical procedure with multiple variations. This paper focuses on a step-by-step surgical approach to perform a modified septoplasty procedure known as limited two-line resection. This surgical technique can be applied to correct a deviated nasal septum in the absence of an external nasal deformity.

Minimally invasive surgical (MIS) procedures rely on anatomical references to localize structures not directly visible to the surgeon. This manuscript describes a combined method of plane-by-plane dissection and sectional anatomy of fresh-frozen specimens to locate the structures at risk during MIS procedures.
