Motor Function Measure

The Motor Function Measure is a standardized clinical assessment used to quantify motor abilities and track functional change, particularly in people with neuromuscular disorders. Through structured tasks that evaluate standing and transfers, axial and proximal movements, and distal motor skills, clinicians score how effectively a patient performs everyday movements, including abilities that may be preserved despite weakness. Repeated measurements help characterize disease progression, evaluate responses to rehabilitation or treatment, and support individualized care planning. By providing objective functional data, the Motor Function Measure complements strength testing and contributes to clinical research and outcome assessment.

Monitoring brain activity during upright motor tasks is of great value when investigating the neural source of movement disorders. Here, we demonstrate a protocol that combines functional near infrared spectroscopy with continuous monitoring of muscle and kinematic activity during 4 types of motor tasks.

Protocols are presented for two established motor coordination tasks, the accelerating rotarod and horizontal bar, also two tests developed in Oxford recently, the static rods and parallel bars. These tests can detect motor impairments potentially of interest in their own right, as well as being possible variables in tests of other areas of behavior.

Using TMS to Measure Motor Excitability During Action Observation

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that involves passing current through an insulated coil placed against the scalp. A brief magnetic field is created by current in the coil, and because of the physical process of induction, this leads to a current in the nearby neural tissue. Depending on the duration, frequency, and magnitude of these magnetic...
