Neonatal Outcomes

Neonatal outcomes are the health results observed in newborns during the neonatal period, typically the first 28 days after birth, and provide key evidence of perinatal well-being and care quality. Clinicians assess them using measures such as survival, Apgar scores, birth weight, gestational age, respiratory status, infection, and admission to neonatal intensive care, linking early findings to maternal, placental, and neonatal conditions. In medicine, these outcomes help identify vulnerable infants, evaluate obstetric and neonatal interventions, monitor disparities, and guide research on morbidity, development, and long-term health.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy following perinatal asphyxia can be studied using animal models. We demonstrate the procedures necessary for establishing a piglet model of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

Neurodevelopmental Reflex Testing in Neonatal Rat Pups

Behavioral testing is the gold standard for determining outcomes following brain injury, and can identify the presence of developmental disabilities in infants and children. Neurodevelopmental reflexes are an early indicator of these abnormalities. A host of easily accomplished developmental reflex tests in the neonatal rodent were developed and described here.

Isolation of Neonatal Extrahepatic Cholangiocytes

A technique to isolate cholangiocytes from the extrahepatic bile ducts of neonatal mice is described. The ducts are meticulously dissected, and then cells are isolated by outgrowth in thick collagen gels. This method provides a useful tool for studying extrahepatic bile duct development and pathology.

Presented here is a protocol to perform comprehensive neonatal echocardiography by trained neonatologists in the neonatal intensive care unit. The trained individuals provide longitudinal assessments of heart function, systemic and pulmonary hemodynamics in a consultative role. The manuscript also describes the requirements to become a fully trained neonatal hemodynamics specialist.
