Neurophysiological Indicators

Neurophysiological indicators are measurable signals and responses that reveal how the nervous system functions, providing objective information for medical assessment and research. They arise from neuronal electrical activity, synaptic communication, and signal transmission along nerves, and can be recorded through methods such as electroencephalography, evoked potentials, electromyography, and nerve-conduction studies. Clinicians use these indicators to evaluate brain and peripheral nerve function, support diagnosis, monitor disease progression, and assess treatment effects. In research, they help link nervous-system activity to behavior, injury, and disease mechanisms, strengthening the development and evaluation of neurological and rehabilitative interventions.

An Introduction to Neurophysiology

2023

Neurophysiology is broadly defined as the study of nervous system function. In this field, scientists investigate the central and peripheral nervous systems at the level of whole organs, cellular networks, single cells, or even subcellular compartments. A unifying feature of this wide-ranging discipline is an interest in the mechanisms that lead to the generation and propagation of electrical impulses within and between neurons. This subject is important not only for our understanding of the...

Certain organic substances change color in dilute solution when the hydronium ion concentration reaches a particular value. For example, phenolphthalein is a colorless substance in any aqueous solution with a hydronium ion concentration greater than 5.0 × 10−9 M (pH < 8.3). In more basic solutions where the hydronium ion concentration is less than 5.0 × 10−9 M (pH > 8.3), it is red or pink. Substances such as phenolphthalein, which can be used to determine the pH of a solution, are called...

Attention control comprises enhancement of target signals and attenuation of distractor signals. We describe an approach to measure separately but concurrently, the neurophysiology of attending and ignoring in sustained intermodal attention, utilizing a passive control condition during which neither process is continuously engaged.

Source: Laboratories of Dr. Ian Pepper and Dr. Charles Gerba -The University of Arizona Demonstrating Author: Luisa Ikner Water quality analysis monitors anthropogenic influences such as pollutants, nutrients, pathogens, and any other constituent that can impact the water’s integrity as a resource. Fecal contamination contributes microbial pathogens that threaten plant, animal, and human health with disease or illness. Increasing water demands and strict quality standards require that water...
