Skeletal Health

Skeletal health is the condition and functional integrity of the bones, joints, and supporting tissues that provide structure, enable movement, and protect organs. It depends on continual bone remodeling, in which osteoclasts resorb older bone and osteoblasts form new tissue, while mineral balance and mechanical loading help regulate strength. In medicine, evaluating skeletal health supports the prevention, diagnosis, and management of osteoporosis, fractures, arthritis, and other disorders that impair mobility or increase injury risk. Clinical assessment, nutritional and physical activity guidance, and targeted treatment can preserve bone strength and function across the lifespan.

The micro-dissected explants technique is a robust and reliable method for isolating proliferative skeletal muscle cells from juvenile, adult or embryonic muscles as a source of skeletal muscle stem cells. Uniquely, these cells have been clonally derived to produce skeletal muscle stem cell lines used for in vivo transplantation.

Classification of Skeletal Muscle Fibers

2019

Skeletal muscles continuously produce ATP to provide the energy that enables muscle contractions. Skeletal muscle fibers can be categorized into three types based on differences in their contraction speed and how they produce ATP, as well as physical differences related to these factors. Most human muscles contain all three muscle fiber types, albeit in varying proportions. Slow-Twitch Muscle Fibers Slow oxidative, muscle fibers appear red due to large numbers of capillaries and high levels of...

What is the Skeletal System?

2019

Overview The adult human skeleton comprises 206 bones that are connected through cartilage, tendons, and ligaments. The skeleton provides a rigid framework for the human body, protects internal organs, and enables movement and locomotion. The human skeletal system consists of the axial and appendicular skeletons. Bone tissue is continuously built up and chewed away by specialized bone cells which are essential to overall health. Dysregulated bone cells and incorrect levels of chemical...
