Ovine Heart Model

The ovine heart model is a research system that uses sheep hearts to study cardiac structure, function, disease, and treatment, providing a clinically relevant bridge between laboratory studies and human medicine. Because sheep have comparable heart size, anatomy, and hemodynamic behavior, researchers can induce cardiac conditions, perform surgical procedures, and monitor physiological responses with specialized imaging and instrumentation. This model supports evaluation of cardiovascular devices, valve and myocardial therapies, electrophysiology interventions, and regenerative approaches. Its size and anatomical accessibility also make it valuable for procedural training and for assessing safety, performance, and translational feasibility before clinical studies.

Intervertebral disc degeneration is a significant contributor to back pain and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Numerous animal models of intervertebral disc degeneration exist. We demonstrate an ovine model of intervertebral disc degeneration, utilizing a drill bit, which achieves a consistent disc injury and reproducible level of disc degeneration.

The Inverted Heart Model for Interstitial Transudate Collection from the Isolated Rat Heart

2017

This protocol describes a method to collect cardiac interstitial fluid from the isolated, perfused rat heart. To physically separate interstitial transudate from coronary venous effluent perfusate, the Langendorff perfused heart is inverted, and the transudate (interstitial fluid) formed on the cardiac surface is collected using a soft latex cap.

Most studies involving the Langendorff apparatus use small animal models due to the increased complexity of systems for larger mammals. We describe a Langendorff system for large animal models that allows for use across a range of species, including humans, and relatively easy data acquisition.
