Super-elderly Patients

Super-elderly patients are adults typically aged 85 years and older, a population whose advanced age can shape disease presentation, treatment response, and healthcare needs. Age-related changes in organ function, pharmacokinetics, immune regulation, and physiological reserve often occur alongside multimorbidity, frailty, cognitive impairment, or polypharmacy, requiring careful clinical assessment. In medicine, evaluating super-elderly patients supports individualized diagnosis, medication selection, risk assessment, and shared decisions that balance treatment benefits with safety, function, and quality of life. Research involving this growing population also helps refine geriatric care strategies and improve evidence-based management for later life.

A Novel Method: Super-selective Adrenal Venous Sampling

Cited by 44 •

2017

'Super-selective' adrenal venous sampling (ssAVS, also called segmental adrenal venous sampling: sAVS) was performed using a micro-catheter to identify adrenal segment(s) that produce excessive amounts of hormones. The ssAVS technique was described, cases in which adrenal segmental lesion(s) were identified by ssAVS were presented, and the usefulness of ssAVS in future adrenal research was discussed.

2025

Overtreatment is often administered to patients with low-risk prostate cancer; super-active surveillance can help avoid such overtreatment.

We describe a super-resolution imaging method to probe the structural organization of the bacterial FtsZ-ring, an essential apparatus for cell division. This method is based on quantitative analyses of photoactivated localization microscopy (PALM) images and can be applied to other bacterial cytoskeletal proteins.

We describe how to implement photoactivated localization microscopy (PALM)-based studies of vesicles in fixed, cultured neurons. Key components of our protocol include labeling vesicles with photoconvertible chimeras, collecting sparsely sampled raw images with a super-resolution microscopy system, and processing the raw images to produce a super-resolution image.

We describe the preparation of three test samples and how they can be used to optimize and assess the performance of STORM microscopes. Using these examples we show how to acquire raw data and then process it to acquire super-resolution images in cells of approximately 30-50 nm resolution.
