Patient-specific Simulation

Patient-specific simulation uses an individual’s clinical data to model their anatomy, physiology, disease course, or likely response to treatment. It combines medical images, laboratory results, and physiological measurements with mathematical, computational, or physical models to reproduce patient-specific conditions and test clinical scenarios without immediate intervention. In medicine, these simulations support diagnosis, treatment planning, surgical rehearsal, medical-device design, and education, while helping compare therapeutic options and anticipate risks. By linking population-level knowledge with individual data, patient-specific simulation contributes to more personalized, evidence-informed care.

Patient-Specific Electric Field Simulation In Spinal Metastasis Electrochemotherapy

2026

This protocol describes a complete, reproducible workflow for patient-specific electric-field simulation and validation of electrochemotherapy (ECT) for spinal metastasis. The workflow integrates multimodal imaging, semi-automatic and manual segmentation, tissue conductivity modeling, linear finite-element electric-field simulation, and experimental validation via post-procedure MRI-based necrosis overlap analysis.

Patient-specific Modeling of the Heart: Estimation of Ventricular Fiber Orientations

2013

A methodology to estimate ventricular fiber orientations from in vivo images of patient heart geometries for personalized modeling is described. Validation of the methodology performed using normal and failing canine hearts demonstrate that that there are no significant differences between estimated and acquired fiber orientations at a clinically observable level.

2012

Patients with visual deficits after stroke report about different constraints in daily life most likely due to variable compensatory strategies, which are difficult to differentiate in clinical routine. We present a clinical set-up which allows measurement of different compensatory head- and eye-movement-strategies and evaluating their effects on driving performance.

2024

Advancements in endovascular treatment have replaced complex open surgical procedures with minimally invasive options, like valve replacement and aneurysm repair. This paper proposes using three-dimensional (3D) modeling and virtual reality to aid in C-arm positioning, angle measurements, and roadmap generation for neuro-interventional catheterization lab procedural planning, minimizing procedure time.

Creation of Patient-Specific Silicone Cardiac Models with Applications in Pre-surgical Plans and Hands-on Training

Patient-specific models improve surgeon and fellow confidence when developing or learning surgical plans. Three-dimensional (3D) printers generate adequate detail for surgical preparation, but fail to replicate tissue haptic fidelity. A protocol is presented detailing the creation of patient-specific, silicone cardiac models, combining 3D printing precision with simulated silicone tissue.
