Spinal Infection

Spinal infection is an infection of the vertebrae, intervertebral discs, or surrounding spinal tissues that can cause pain, inflammation, neurological injury, and systemic illness. It commonly develops when microorganisms, often bacteria, reach the spine through the bloodstream, spread from nearby tissue, or enter after surgery or trauma, producing conditions such as vertebral osteomyelitis, discitis, or epidural abscess. Clinical evaluation combines symptoms and neurological examination with blood tests, cultures, and magnetic resonance imaging to identify the affected structures and causative pathogen. Early diagnosis guides targeted antimicrobial therapy, while drainage or surgery may be required to control infection, stabilize the spine, or relieve neural compression.

The protocol describes a novel in vivo mouse model of spinal implant infection where a stainless-steel k-wire implant is infected with bioluminescent Staphylococcus aureus Xen36. Bacterial burden is monitored longitudinally with bioluminescent imaging and confirmed with colony forming unit counts after euthanasia.
