Standardized Language Battery

A standardized language battery is a structured set of validated assessments used to measure language abilities consistently across individuals, supporting clinical evaluation and research in medicine. It typically samples domains such as receptive and expressive language, vocabulary, grammar, auditory comprehension, and verbal expression through standardized instructions, tasks, administration conditions, and norm-referenced scoring. Clinicians compare performance with age- or education-matched reference groups to identify language impairment, characterize its severity and pattern, and distinguish communication difficulties from broader cognitive or neurological conditions. These batteries contribute to diagnosing aphasia and developmental language disorders, planning rehabilitation, documenting treatment outcomes, and tracking changes over time.

Working memory predicts a significant amount of variance for a variety of cognitive tasks, including speaking, reading, and writing. However, few tools are available to assess working memory in children. We present an innovative, computer-based battery that comprehensively assesses different components of working memory in school-age children.

A battery is a galvanic cell that is used as a source of electrical power for specific applications. Modern batteries exist in a multitude of forms to accommodate various applications, from tiny button batteries such as those that power wristwatches to the very large batteries used to supply backup energy to municipal power grids. Some batteries are designed for single-use applications and cannot be recharged (primary cells), while others are based on conveniently reversible cell reactions that...

Source: Laboratories of Sarah I. Gimbel and Jonas T. Kaplan— University of Southern California Understanding language is one of the most complex cognitive tasks that humans are capable of. Given the incredible amount of possible choices when combining individual words to form meaning in sentences, it is crucial that the brain is able to identify when words form coherent combinations and when an anomaly appears that undermines meaning. Extensive research has shown that certain scalp-recorded...

We explore the use of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to improve language abilities in patients with chronic stroke and non-fluent aphasia. After identifying a site in the right frontal gyrus for each patient that responds optimally to stimulation, we target this site during ten days of rTMS treatment.
