Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disorder characterized by reduced bone strength, making bones more vulnerable to fractures and creating a major concern in medicine. It develops when bone resorption by osteoclasts exceeds new bone formation by osteoblasts, leading to decreased bone mineral density and deterioration of bone microarchitecture. Clinicians assess fracture risk through medical history, physical evaluation, and bone mineral density testing, often using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Prevention and treatment may include weight-bearing exercise, adequate calcium and vitamin D, fall-risk reduction, and medications that reduce bone loss or promote bone formation, helping preserve mobility and quality of life.
