Suspension Sutures

Suspension sutures are surgical sutures used to elevate, stabilize, or reposition soft tissues by attaching them to stronger anatomical structures. During a procedure, the surgeon places the suture through or around the target tissue and secures it to a supporting ligament, fascia, bone, or other stable tissue, creating controlled tension that maintains the intended position during healing. In medicine, suspension sutures can support weakened or prolapsed tissues, reinforce repairs, and improve anatomical alignment in reconstructive and minimally invasive surgery. Their effectiveness depends on accurate placement, appropriate tension, tissue quality, and secure fixation, while complications may include pain, infection, suture failure, or injury to nearby structures.

The tail-suspension test is validated as an experimental procedure to assess antidepressant efficacy of drug treatments in mice. Mice are suspended by their tails for six minutes and escape-related behaviors are assessed. We describe procedures used in conducting the tail suspension test.

Q Suture Technique: A Suturing Technique to Reduce Gap Formation and Increase Tensile Strength in Tendon Repair

In this video, we demonstrate suturing techniques — core suture and Q suture — to repair the foot flexor tendon in an ex vivo porcine model. Q sutures enhance the strength of the core suture in tendon repair and decrease gapping at the tendon repair site.

Sutures of the Skull

The human skull is composed of several bones that come together to protect the brain and support the structures of the face. The junctions where these bones meet are called sutures. Sutures are immobile joints between adjacent bones of the skull. The narrow gap between the bones is filled with dense, fibrous connective tissue that unites the bones. The long sutures located between the skull bones are not straight but instead follow irregular, tightly twisting paths. These twisting lines tightly...

ECM Suspension Preparation: A Technique to Obtain Homogenous Suspension from Tissue-derived Extracellular Matrix

This video describes the preparation of a homogenized and digested extracellular matrix suspension from decellularized and lyophilized tissues. This technique helps in fabricating ECM-derived porous foams and microcarriers for use as substrates in advanced 3D cell culture models.

Children at play often make suspensions such as mixtures of mud and water, flour and water, or a suspension of solid pigments in water known as tempera paint. These suspensions are heterogeneous mixtures composed of relatively large particles visible to the naked eye or seen with a magnifying glass. They are cloudy, and the suspended particles settle out after mixing. The suspended particles in a suspension settle out after some time of mixing. The separation of particles from a suspension is...
