Swallow Parameter Quantification

Swallow parameter quantification is the objective measurement of swallowing physiology to characterize how safely and efficiently a person transports food or liquid from the mouth to the esophagus. It uses instrumental assessments such as videofluoroscopic imaging, fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation, manometry, or flow measurements to quantify timing, movement, pressure, bolus transit, airway invasion, and pharyngeal residue. In medicine, these data help identify the mechanisms and severity of dysphagia, distinguish impaired airway protection from inefficient clearance, and guide individualized rehabilitation or dietary recommendations. Standardized measurements also support treatment monitoring, clinical research, and comparison of swallowing function across patient populations.

2014

Coordinate mapping is a method of documenting salient features of hyolaryngeal biomechanics in the pharyngeal phase of swallowing. This methodology uses image analysis software to record coordinates of anatomical landmarks. These coordinates are imported into an excel macro and translated into kinematic variables of interest useful in dysphagia research.

We present a method for quantifying growth phenotypes of individual yeast cells as they grow into colonies on solid media using time-lapse microscopy termed, One-cell Doubling Evaluation of Living Arrays of Yeast (ODELAY). Population heterogeneity of genetically identical cells growing into colonies can be directly observed and quantified.

Upper GI Series: Barium Swallow

2025

The Barium Swallow Study, or a Barium Esophagogram, is a diagnostic imaging method used to visualize the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. It employs barium sulfate, a radiopaque contrast material, to provide clear images of the upper digestive system, helping to identify abnormalities, diseases, or structural issues. Purpose and Procedure Patients undergoing this procedure ingest a liquid containing barium sulfate with a chalky...
