Volume Loading

Volume loading is a medical intervention that increases circulating intravascular volume, usually through intravenous administration of fluids, to support tissue perfusion and cardiovascular function. The added fluid expands the vascular compartment, increases venous return and ventricular preload, and may improve cardiac output when reduced blood volume limits circulation. Clinicians use volume loading in selected patients with hypovolemia, hypotension, or impaired perfusion, while assessing fluid responsiveness and monitoring for complications such as edema or fluid overload. Understanding the balance between restoring circulation and exceeding a patient’s capacity is important in emergency care, perioperative medicine, and critical care.

Rat Heterotopic Abdominal Heart/Single-lung Transplantation in a Volume-loaded Configuration

2015

We describe a novel technique for heterotopic abdominal heart-lung transplantation (HAHLT) in rats. The transplant configuration results in a partially loaded graft circulation, allowing direct functional assessment. This model may be employed for acute or chronic studies of function and immunologic status of the transplanted graft.

Constant Volume Calorimetry

2020

Calorimeters are useful to determine the heat released or absorbed by a chemical reaction. Coffee cup calorimeters are designed to operate at constant (atmospheric) pressure and are convenient to measure heat flow (or enthalpy change) accompanying processes that occur in solution at constant pressure. A different type of calorimeter that operates at constant volume, colloquially known as a bomb calorimeter, is used to measure the energy produced by reactions that yield large amounts of heat and...

Density and Volume

Density and VolumeDensity and volume are important properties that help us understand the nature of matter. Volume measures the amount of space an object occupies, while density describes how much mass is in a given volume. These concepts explain why some objects float while others sink and how different materials behave in various environments.Science and Engineering Practices (SEP): Developing and Using ModelsYou can explore density and volume by creating models that demonstrate these...

Volume of Distribution

2025

The apparent volume of distribution (Vd) is a crucial pharmacokinetic parameter representing the hypothetical body fluid volume into which a drug disperses. It is calculated based on the total amount of drug in the body (estimated from the administered dose and bioavailability) divided by the plasma drug concentration. The total amount of drug in the body does not directly refer to the dose given but is derived by accounting for absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion processes.

Impact Loading

2024

Impact loading occurs when a moving object collides with a stationary structure, such as a rod with a uniform cross-sectional area fixed at one end. Under these conditions, the rod absorbs the kinetic energy from the striking object, leading to deformation and subsequent stress development. As the rod returns to its original position and reaches maximum stress, the absorbed energy, initially manifested as kinetic energy, transforms entirely into strain energy. In cases of elastic deformation,...
