Western-style Diet

Western-style diet is a dietary pattern characterized by frequent intake of processed and fast foods, refined grains, added sugars, and foods high in saturated fat, alongside relatively low consumption of fruits, vegetables, and fiber. Its high energy density and nutrient imbalance can promote excess calorie intake and alter glucose and lipid metabolism, while dietary components may influence inflammation and the gut microbiome. In medicine, studying this pattern helps researchers evaluate links with obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic conditions. Understanding its effects supports dietary assessment, prevention strategies, and evidence-based nutrition counseling.
