Brain Cell Culture

Brain cell culture is the laboratory maintenance and study of neurons and other brain-derived cells outside the organism, providing a controlled model for investigating nervous system biology. Researchers isolate primary cells or use established cell lines, then support their survival and growth with defined culture media, suitable substrates, temperature, and carbon dioxide levels; neurons can extend processes and form functional networks while glial cells provide essential support. In neuroscience, brain cell culture enables analysis of cellular development, signaling, synaptic function, neurotoxicity, and disease-related changes. It also supports drug screening and mechanistic studies that complement animal models and inform research into neurological disorders.

Endothelial Cell Culture from Rat Brain Microvessels: A Procedure to Isolate and Culture Endothelial Cells from Microvessels of Rat Brain

2023

This video presents the isolation of microvessels from a rat brain using a combination of density gradient centrifugation and enzymatic digestion mehods. The isolated microvessels can be cultured in a culture flask pre-coated with collagen and fibronectin matrix to obtain endothelial cell colonies.

Generating an Organoid Culture from a Brain Tumor Cell Suspension

2025

This video describes the preparation and cultivation of brain tumor organoids from single-cell suspension. Using a laminin-rich extracellular matrix as a scaffold and culture media for nutrients, cells are facilitated to multiply and self-organize within the organoid. Consequently, ex vivo organoids are generated, mimicking cellular diversity and the microenvironment of brain tumors.

Obtaining a Mixed Glial Cell Culture from a Neonatal Mouse Brain
