Central Nervous System

The central nervous system (CNS) is the body’s main processing network, consisting of the brain and spinal cord, and it coordinates sensation, movement, cognition, and essential physiological functions. It works by receiving sensory information, integrating signals through interconnected neurons and glial cells, and transmitting commands through electrical impulses and chemical neurotransmitters. In neuroscience, studying the CNS helps explain neural circuits, behavior, learning, and disease, while methods such as electrophysiology, brain imaging, and molecular analysis reveal how nervous system structure and function change. This knowledge supports research into neurological disorders, injury, rehabilitation, and therapeutic development.

Generation of a Murine Model with a Central Nervous System Infection

2025

This video demonstrates the generation of a mouse model with a CNS infection. A suckling pup is injected with the virus both intracranially and intraperitoneally. The virus spreads, infecting the CNS causing neuronal cell death and inflammation. The pup is assessed for symptoms of infection as the disease progresses.

Optical clearing techniques are revolutionizing the way tissues are visualized. In this report we describe modifications of the original Clear Lipid-exchanged Acrylamide-hybridized Rigid Imaging-compatible Tissue-hYdrogel (CLARITY) protocol that yields more consistent and less expensive results.

Intrathecal Delivery of a Test Compound to the Rat Central Nervous System

Source: Chen, Y., et al. Intrathecal Delivery of Antisense Oligonucleotides in the Rat Central Nervous System. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates the delivery of a test compound into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through a catheter implanted in the lumbar spinal column of a rat model. The compound circulates along the CSF to the brain and spinal cord, enters neurons, and offers therapeutic potential.

In this video we demonstrate how to isolate mononuclear cells from the central nervous system of rats with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

Extracellular Recording of Electrical Activity in the Drosophila Central Nervous System

2025

The video demonstrates the extracellular recording of neuronal activity from the central nervous system (CNS) of Drosophila larvae. The transected CNS is positioned in a recording chamber, and the electrical activity from a descending nerve is recorded to establish the baseline firing frequency. A test agent is then introduced, and the change in firing frequency is recorded to determine the agent's excitatory or inhibitory effect.
