Chronic Neural Recording

Chronic neural recording is the long-term measurement of electrical activity from the nervous system, allowing researchers to monitor neural signals across days, weeks, or longer periods. The method uses implanted electrodes or electrode arrays that remain positioned near neurons, where they detect action potentials and local field potentials while recording systems amplify, filter, and store the signals. In neuroscience, chronic recordings reveal how neural circuits change during learning, movement, behavior, disease progression, or treatment. They also support brain-computer interfaces and longitudinal studies that require measurements from the same neural populations over time, improving understanding of circuit dynamics and individual variability.

The design and assembly of microdrives for in vivo electrophysiological recordings of brain signals from the mouse is described. By attaching microelectrode bundles to sturdy driveable carriers, these techniques allow for long-term and stable neural recordings. The lightweight design allows for unrestricted behavioral performance by the animal following drive implantation.
