Colorimetric Dish Electrodes

Colorimetric dish electrodes are electrode systems integrated with culture dishes that translate electrical activity into visible color changes, providing an accessible way to study neural signaling. Their operation couples electrode-mediated electrical stimulation or recording with an electrochemical indicator, in which changes in oxidation state alter light absorption and produce a measurable color signal. In neuroscience, this approach can help visualize activity across cultured neuronal networks while linking electrical behavior to spatial patterns in the dish. Colorimetric readouts may complement conventional electrophysiology and fluorescence-based methods, supporting demonstrations of neuronal excitability, screening of experimental conditions, and development of low-cost platforms for neural research.

Colorimetric Assay for Quantification of Lactate in Test Samples

2025

This video describes a colorimetric assay for lactate measurement in cell lysates by using the lactate dehydrogenase enzyme. This enzyme converts lactate into pyruvate, along with the conversion of NAD to NADH that reacts with tetrazolium dyes and gives a colored product that can be measured spectrophotometrically to quantitate the lactate.

The assay describes a rapid means to measure early biofilm formation in bacteria and fungi. This method uses a microtiter plate as the substratum for microbial biofilm formation, and the biofilm is visualized using crystal violet strain. The assay provides either a qualitative or quantitative assay for early biofilm formation.

Colorimetric Detection of Cortex Degradation During Bacterial Spore Germination

Source: Francis, M. B., et al. Detecting Cortex Fragments During Bacterial Spore Germination. J. Vis. Exp. (2016).This video demonstrates a colorimetric method to detect cortex degradation during bacterial spore germination by measuring the release of reducing sugars over time. Using N-acetylglucosamine standards and time-point samples, the assay quantifies sugar concentration through a purple chromogenic reaction, indicating the extent of cortex hydrolysis.

On comparing the reactivity of silver and lead, it is observed that the two ionic species, Ag+ (aq) and Pb2+ (aq), show a difference in their redox reactivity towards copper: the silver ion undergoes spontaneous reduction, while the lead ion does not. This relative redox activity can be easily quantified in electrochemical cells by a property called cell potential. This property is commonly known as cell voltage in electrochemistry, and it is a measure of the energy which accompanies the charge...
