Corticospinal Pathway

The corticospinal pathway is a network of descending nerve fibers that carries voluntary motor commands from the cerebral cortex to the spinal cord, making it essential for purposeful movement and motor control. Signals originate primarily in the motor cortex, pass through the brainstem, and mostly cross at the medullary pyramidal decussation before descending to spinal motor circuits that activate skeletal muscles. In neuroscience, studying this pathway clarifies how the brain plans and executes movement, coordinates skilled actions, and adapts through motor learning. Damage to corticospinal fibers can produce weakness, impaired dexterity, and abnormal reflexes, providing important insight into neurological injury and rehabilitation.

C4 Pathway and CAM

Most plants use the C3 pathway for carbon fixation. However, some plants, such as sugar cane, corn, and cacti that grow in hot conditions, use alternative pathways to fix carbon and conserve energy loss due to photorespiration. Photorespiration is the process that occurs when the oxygen concentration is high. Under such conditions, the rubisco enzyme in the Calvin cycle binds O2 instead of CO2, which halts photosynthesis and consumes energy. C4 Pathway The C4 pathway is used by plants such as...
