Courtship Index

The Courtship Index is a quantitative measure of courtship behavior, often used in neuroscience to assess how strongly an animal engages in reproductive social interactions. During a defined behavioral assay, researchers record and score actions such as orientation, following, tapping, licking, wing displays, or attempted copulation, typically expressing courtship time as a proportion of the observation period. This behavioral metric helps link changes in motivation and social behavior to neural circuits, genes, and neuromodulatory systems. Comparing Courtship Index values across experimental conditions can reveal how sensory cues, neural activity, drugs, or genetic manipulations influence courtship and related social behaviors.

Drosophila Courtship Conditioning: A Method to Test Learning and Memory In Flies

2023

This video describes a classical conditioning assay that tests learning and memory in Drosophila, called courtship conditioning. The assay is based on the reduction of male courtship after experiencing a rejection by a non-receptive premated female. The example protocol shows a setup for the procedure that can be used to assess short- and long-term memory.

This protocol describes a Drosophila learning and memory assay called courtship conditioning. This classic assay is based on a reduction of male courtship behavior after sexual rejection by a non-receptive premated female. This natural form of behavioral plasticity can be used to test learning, short-term memory, and long-term memory.
