Food Reward Assessment

Food reward assessment is the systematic measurement of how strongly food motivates behavior and produces pleasure, helping researchers distinguish appetite, liking, and motivational value. In neuroscience, assessments may combine food-preference or consumption measures with behavioral tasks that quantify effort to obtain a food, while neural and physiological recordings reveal activity in reward-related circuits. These approaches help clarify how sensory properties, hunger, learning, and metabolic state shape eating behavior. They are used to investigate obesity, eating disorders, addiction-like feeding, and the effects of hormones, medications, or environmental cues on food choice and reward processing.

Anticipatory Food-Reward Elicitation of Appetitive Ultrasonic Vocalizations in Laboratory Rats and Mice

2026

Laboratory rat and mouse ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) are useful for studying vocal and neural function. This protocol describes a food-reward paradigm that reliably elicits appetitive USVs without mating-related confounds. It details animal conditioning, stimulus presentation, recording, and acoustic analysis, providing a reproducible method for studying affective-motivational and cranial sensorimotor function.

An Introduction to Reward and Addiction

2023

Consequences play a major role in controlling our behavior. If the consequence is a reward, then it encourages the associated behavior. Rewards can come in many forms such as a pleasant feeling, money, or food. However, sometimes an individual engages in compulsive behavior despite of negative consequences, and this state is known as addiction. Administration of addictive substances is neurochemically rewarding, which ultimately causes a loss of control in limiting the intake. Scientists aim...
