Locomotor Behavior

Locomotor behavior is the coordinated movement of an organism through its environment, including walking, swimming, flying, and other forms of navigation, and it provides a visible measure of nervous-system function. In neuroscience, sensory inputs such as vision, touch, and proprioception interact with spinal central pattern generators, descending brain signals, and motor neurons to organize rhythmic muscle activity, while feedback continuously adjusts speed, direction, and balance. Researchers analyze locomotor behavior to study motor control, neural circuits, learning, and movement disorders. Behavioral assays and kinematic measurements can reveal how injury, disease, or experimental manipulation changes circuit function and guide rehabilitation strategies.

2017

The island assay is a relatively new, cost-effective assay that can be used to evaluate the basic locomotor behavior of Drosophila melanogaster. This manuscript describes algorithms for automatic data processing and objective quantification of island assay data, making this assay a sensitive, high-throughput readout for large genetic or pharmacological screens.

We describe a method to record motor activity, timed to the electrically recorded tarsal contact signal in a tethered insect, walking on a slippery surface. This is used to study the neural basis of adaptive behavior under reduced influence of mechanical interaction between legs through the substrate.

Locomotor activity (LMA) is a simple and easily performed measurement of behavior in mice. Coupling of video tracking software (VTS) and LMA allows for the improvement of specificity and sensitivity, especially when compared with the manual, line crossing method of LMA analysis. Additionally VTS allows long-term tracking of mouse LMA.
